It is the 7th-largest city of France, and is also the fastest-growing city in the country over the past 25 years.
Montpellier is wellknown as an "university city". Nearly one third of the population are students from two universities and from twelve higher education institutions that are outside the university framework in the city. At the European level, Montpellier plays a major role through its research activities in biology, medicine, engineering, agronomy, computer sciences...
