Objectives

This option aims to train agricultural engineers with expertise in the following fields:

  • Environmental diagnostics: physical, chemical and biological conditions of soil and water - life cycle assessment.
  • Preservation of resources: balance of needs and availability, pollution prevention.
  • Integrated solutions for territories: Geoprospect software, waste recovery sectors, action plan for restoring water quality and soil conservation.

    The Water, cultivated areas and environment management option covers the following subjects:

    Water and Soil

    Train high-level experts able to carry out diagnoses, innovate and carry out research on contemporary issues of water and soil management, for changing climate conditions, land use and spatial planning:

    • design action plans to address water issues: quantitative balances between uses (drinking water, agriculture, ecosystems), preservation and restoration of water quality and aquatic environments, management of watercourses and irrigated areas.
    • understand and preserve the state of soils so that they fulfil their functions of supporting ecosystem services: combat degradation (including erosion, pollution, settlement, loss of biodiversity), and restoration (including ICPE, sites and polluted soils).

    Environment

    Quantification and assessment of health and environmental impacts through life cycle approaches. Definition and use of indicators (multicriteria approach, biological and biodiversity indicators). Impact studies for development projects. Management and recovery of waste and effluents: methanisation, composting, reuse of wastewater.

    Tools and methods of engineers

    Through practical and analytic workshops, train students to become experts in the use of existing and emerging tools (Géomatique software, sensors, data processing and modelling) to characterize the spatial and temporal dynamics of natural resources. Group engineering project mobilizing the knowledge and skills needed to fulfil a professional assignment.

    Internships

    • An engineer internship in a company (6 months, compulsory) is based on carrying out a study, research or assignment in a company (in France or abroad) in one of the fields covered by the training programme.
    • As the internship is a key period of transition from the academic to the professional world, the teaching team helps students choose ones coherent with their career plans. A group meeting held mid-way through the internship period allows students to share experiences and interact with the teaching team. Outside professionals attend the presentation of the internship report.
  • Admission

    The 3rd year option is open, after review by the admissions committee, to students who have validated the M1 level (first year of a master's program) and come from:

    • an international partner institution in the context of academic mobility (earning credits)
    • a school of agriculture under the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food (See Ecole des groupes Ingénieurs) or the Ministry of Higher Education for Research and Innovation
    • or a French institution with which Montpellier SupAgro has signed an agreement

    Application forms may be obtained from the educational directorate of your institution.

    Students who have not validated the 2nd year (M1) of the Montpellier SupAgro Agricultural Engineer course are not awarded a diploma at the end of the 3rd year of the training program.
