Second year of Master (M2, Semesters 9 & 10) - Master of Science 2

International Master “Agronomy and Agrifood Science” (Master 3A)

Specialization Environmental management of tropical ecosystems and forests (GEEFT)

Update : 05/04/2020

Addressing the challenges of managing tropical ecosystems and forests

What type of training ?
une formation diplômante, sous statut étudiant

For who ?
étudiant titulaire d'un diplôme français, étudiant international, Professional

Where ?
AgroParisTech (centre de Montpellier)

This specialization aims to prepare students to tackle the challenges of managing forest areas in tropical countries by giving them the means to consider knowledge of forests and the ecological characteristics of these environments alongside socio-economic and political issues and policies of the intertropical region.

The role of forests in sustainable development processes involves complex issues which are the subject of controversy, debate and international commitments:

  • biodiversity conservation
  • regulation of mechanisms governing climate change
  • controlling deforestation
  • forest-agriculture and agroforestry interactions
  • developing wood and non-wood forest products
  • forest management and regulation of logging, etc.

  • biodiversity knowledge and management
  • Mediterranean and tropical countries
  • natural resources, environment, territories

  • Programme

Number of ECTS credits : 60 ECTS

Language of instruction : In French

The programme focuses on the management of natural environments and resources (botany, ecology, climate change issues, agroforestry, tropical timber, ecological engineering, silviculture, dendrometry and forest inventory, forest management), as well as human dynamics affecting ecosystems (survey methods, management science, sociology, negotiation, ethnoecology, forest economics, forest and environmental policies).

Other modules cover the tools of an engineer (GIS, system dynamics and modelling, project approaches, statistics) and personal development (English and foreign languages, preparation for entry into the professional world, scientific communication).

The knowledge and skills acquired are implemented in the field through a module in Guyana on the discovery of humid tropical forests, microprojects, and during the individual internship.

The course concludes with an individual internship lasting from five to six months, followed by the writing of a thesis and its presentation before a jury. The objective is for students to implement what they have learned and prepare for their professional integration. The internship allows students to perform a job on their own, benefiting from individualized supervision.

The subject of the internship can be a research or an operational topic, one of the themes covered in the course, or in response to a request formulated by the host organization. The internship leads to the writing of a thesis and a public defence before a jury composed at least of the internship tutor from the host organization, the referent instructor from AgroParisTech and a person not involved with the internship but working on a related theme.

  • Admission

    • Initial training:
      •  For M1, students holding a Bachelor degree in the fields of biology sciences, forestry or agronomy.
      •  For M2, students holding a Master (M1) degree in the same fields.
    • Lifelong learning: the validation of acquired experience and the organization of the programme in credits render it possible to propose individualized courses, adapted to each situation. Training can be spread out over time when needed.
    • Selection: candidates are selected based on their applications according to the places available. The online application may be completed from January to March.

  • Careers

The “Environmental management of tropical ecosystems and forests” specialization is aimed at students wishing to pursue an international career in the fields of sustainable development and the social management of tropical ecosystems and forests. However, a significant part of the contents of the programme also are applicable to non-tropical areas.

In Europe and countries of the South, this training is of interest to both the public and private sector. Potential employers are international organizations, administrations, local authorities, public institutions, forest-environment consulting agencies, development and conservation non-governmental organizations, research institutions, natural resource management consulting firms and logging companies.

    The types of jobs targeted:

    • Task officer in international organizations
    • Forest and environment research officer
    • Forest ecosystems manager
    • Forest manager
    •  Forest-biodiversity conservation officer
    • Research-development project manager
    • Government forest-environment engineer
